Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Windhoek to Swakopmund – Namibia

This Private Namibia Safari begins in Windhoek, the charming capital of Namibia. Set off from Windhoek on the first morning, driving down towards Swakopmund town on the Atlantic coastline. Along the way, we pass through the bustling town of Okahandja, best known for its woodcarvers' market. Then we visit the Walvis Bay Lagoon which is an important wetland area for birds. A variety of waterbirds can be seen at the lagoon, often including large flocks of lesser and greater flamingoes. After taking a few snapshots of the birds at the lagoon we proceed to Swakopmund, about a 45-minute drive further.

Arriving at the guesthouse in Swakopmund you can take a rest or head out and explore the seaside town on foot. This is the most popular beach holiday town in Namibia with a palm-lined promenade, plenty of sights and things to do. Go to the craft market, quaint shops, or a coffee shop and walk along the jetty. Visit the attractions of Swakopmund - Woermannhaus and other German-colonial era buildings, Swakopmund Museum, Crystal Gallery, and the National Aquarium. Alternatively, book an optional adventure activity for this afternoon.

  • Accommodation: Organic Square Guesthouse (or similar) in Swakopmund

Day 2: Swakopmund to Namib Desert – Namibia

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and an early morning stroll around Swakopmund before we begin our journey north. Due to the long drive ahead, we do not recommend booking any optional activities this morning. Should you wish to do optional activities in Swakopmund, please book an extra night's stay in Swakopmund before this safari departs or see our 5-Day Private Namibia Desert & Swakopmund Safari which gives you more time in Swakopmund.

We leave the coast of the chilly Atlantic Ocean behind by mid-morning and drive inland to Sesriem. Our drive takes us via Kuiseb River Canyon, known as the refuge where two German geologists holed up during WWII with their dog. Then we travel on to the tiny hamlet of Solitaire the sole outpost between the Namib-Naukluft Park and the Swakopmund. From Solitaire it's on to Sesriem and our desert camp near the national park. End the day off with sundowners and what's usually a spectacular sunset over the desert, before we gather for a barbecue (braai) around the campfire.

  • Accommodation: Desert Camp (or similar) near Sesriem
  • Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3: Namib Desert - Namibia

Today we get up early and make our way into the ancient Namib Desert, arriving at the entrance gate of the Namib-Naukluft Park at about sunrise.

Entering this massive park we drive through an ancient river bed flanked by tall orange-red sand dunes en route to Sossusvlei. We cover the last stretch to the pans on foot, admiring the arresting desert scenery as we walk. The Sossusvlei and Deadvlei pans offer striking visual contrasts with dry bleached pans scattered with gnarled dead trees under intense blue skies and the vivid ochre dunes around them. After walking on the cracked-white clay pans iconic of Namibia we drive to Sesriem Canyon to walk in the shade of this deep, rocky gorge. Then we return to the desert camp to unwind and take a refreshing dip in the pool. This evening, sit back and gaze at the starry desert skies, enjoying the peace out here.

  • Accommodation: Desert Camp (or similar) near Sesriem
  • Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 4: Namib Desert to Windhoek – Namibia

Our final morning on safari in Namibia starts with an early breakfast in the desert setting at camp. Then we drive back to the little town of Solitaire where we visit the local cheetah conservation project. We spend about an hour at the center, viewing the resident cheetahs up close and learning all about the fastest land mammals on the planet. The centre is home to rescued cheetahs that cannot be released back into the wild for various reasons which we'll learn more about during the tour.

After spending some time with the cheetahs we travel back to Windhoek via dramatic mountain passes. Back in Windhoek this afternoon your guide drops you at the airport or your post-tour accommodation, wrapping this short Private Namibia Safari up.

  • Meals included: Breakfast

Namibia Safari Transport

Transport on this private safari is in a 4x4 vehicle. For small tours with 2 guests a Toyota Hilux is used and for groups of 4-6 guests, a Toyota Landcruiser with a pop-up roof is used. The Toyota Landcruiser vehicles used for 4-6 passengers have been specially designed and customized for the rough roads of Namibia. The vehicles are fitted with six comfortable seats ensuring a window seat for every guest. Large sliding windows provide optimal views for wildlife photography and taking in the scenery. There is a bar fridge onboard to keep drinks cold as well as electric sockets for battery chargers.

Meals on Safari in Namibia

This guided Private Namibia Safari includes all breakfasts on tour and two dinners as per the itinerary. Lunches are not included in the tour price. All meals not listed on the itinerary as included will be for your own account. You will either be able to buy a lunch pack from the guesthouses/lodges that we stay at or your guide will take you to a deli, bakery, or shop where you can buy lunch. A budget of about N$300 per person should suffice for the own-expense dinner in Swakopmund.

Namibia Safari Accommodation

This private safari makes use of mid-range lodges and guesthouses. Namibia has a good tourism infrastructure and relatively high standards of service in general, providing plenty of good quality options. All of the stays on this tour offer clean and simple, yet comfortable accommodations in twin, double or single rooms with en suite facilities.

If one of the establishments specified on the itinerary is not available, accommodation of similar standards will be used. Although every effort is made to use substitute accommodation of the same standards, it may sometimes be necessary to use accommodation of a higher standard (at a small extra cost) when availability is an issue.
