Find Out More Here!Dream of seeing African mountain gorillas in the wild? This is one of the most poignant wildlife experiences on earth!
On gorilla trekking tours you trek into the rainforests of central Africa to spend time with the endangered gorillas in their natural habitat. With just over 1000 African mountain gorillas surviving in the wild today encountering these critically endangered primates is indeed a rare privilege.
Our gorilla trekking tours take place in Uganda and Rwanda. The African mountain gorillas are found in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of Uganda and the Virunga Mountains Region, spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Gorilla trekking in Rwanda happens in Volcanoes National Park, set in the Virunga Mountains, bordering on Virunga National Park in the DRC and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in southwestern Uganda.
Most of our gorilla trekking safaris go to Bwindi National Park which offers the best value-for-money gorilla trekking experience. We also feature gorilla trekking tours to Rwanda but the gorilla trekking permits are more affordable in Uganda which makes it a better budget option. Some of our gorilla trekking tours visit both Uganda and Rwanda enabling you to experience the best of both destinations at a reasonable price. We currently do not, unfortunately, visit Virunga National Park in the DRC due to civil unrest and political instability in the country.
Please note that gorilla trekking tour prices do not include the Gorilla Trekking Permit.
Gorilla Permit fees cost US$ 600 in Uganda and US$ 1500 in Rwanda.
Most short tours that focus primarily on gorilla trekking are lodge safaris. In Uganda, the gorilla trekking tours include lodge accommodation in chalets or bungalows based at Lake Bunyonyi, near Bwindi Park. In Rwanda, the gorilla trekking tours include hotel and guesthouse or B&B accommodation close to Volcanoes National Park.
Our budget gorilla trekking tours include most meals, an English-speaking driver/guide and transport in 4x4 Landcruisers or adapted safari vehicles.
The shortest gorilla tours in Uganda and Rwanda are 3-days long. These short trips get you to the national parks to go gorilla trekking and don't include other wildlife or adventure destinations. The slightly longer gorilla trekking trips also visit other parks and attractions in Uganda and Rwanda. In Uganda, these include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park and Kibale Park for chimpanzee tracking. In Rwanda, you can go game viewing in Akagera National Park and chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest National Park, as part of your gorilla trekking tour.
If you have one week or longer to travel then budget-friendly options include Overland Africa Tours - accommodated or camping style. The Overland Tours combine gorilla trekking with other activities and destinations, ranging from a handful of highlights in Uganda to the world-famous Masai Mara in neighbouring Kenya. Overland trips which include a gorilla trekking component span as long as 46 days, travelling overland between Johannesburg in South Africa and Nairobi in Kenya, giving budget-conscious travellers a wide array of options.
One of our most exciting tour options is the gorilla habituation experience which gives you more time with the gorilla family you visit, trekking in smaller groups than usual. Another rare find - our gorilla tours that offer travellers two opportunities to go gorilla trekking, as opposed to the standard tours which only give you one chance to trek.
Only children over the age of 15 years are permitted on gorilla treks.
We can take you there, into the rainforests of central Africa, where you'll come face-to-face with the endangered mountain gorillas.
Feel free to ask one of our Africa travel experts about gorilla trekking experiences and tour options.
