The main drawcard for East African safari holidays is the legendary “Out of Africa” savannahs teeming with wildlife. The ultimate show here is the Great Migration taking place between Masai Mara in southern Kenya and the Serengeti in northern Tanzania every year. That said, the wildlife spectacles to be found in Tanzania and Kenya’s finest game parks are phenomenal year-round. In East Africa, you’ll find safari lodges reminiscent of the great explorer’s camps surrounded by the quintessential African plains featured in movies.
Home to the oldest safari industries in Africa, Kenya and Tanzania have mastered the classical African safari experience, kids or no kids. Both Kenya and Tanzania are well-equipped for tourism and have long histories of catering for family travel.
East Africa is however usually recommended for families with children over the age of eight due to age restrictions on game viewing activities and malaria risk. For families travelling with children under the age of eight, there are numerous malaria-free areas in Southern Africa which feature destinations and lodges that cater to families with young children. See Family Safaris in Southern Africa for affordable options.
